Norway is home to a circular battery ecosystem
Together with our Nordic neighbours, Norway is part of an emerging Nordic battery value chain that will support the European battery industry by reducing the carbon footprint of battery production and developing advanced system integration as well as solutions for reusing and recycling batteries. The Norwegian battery ecosystem seeks to attract investments to bolster the value chain and export high-quality products to deliver some of the most sustainable batteries in the world.
Raw materials
Norway has been processing raw materials for over 100 years. Today the processing industry has a minimal carbon footprint, providing clean, high-quality materials that are vital components in modern-day battery technology, such as aluminium, silicon, nickel, cobalt, graphite and copper.
Cell production
Battery cell production is emerging in Norway. Battery manufacturers focus both on producing batteries with today’s technology and on researching and developing the batteries of tomorrow, particularly in light of the growing lack of raw materials worldwide. In addition to cell production, Norway is a leader in assembling battery packs and designing modules for application in the maritime sector.
Application
Norway has centuries-long maritime traditions and experience in electrifying maritime transport. Norway also has the world’s highest penetration of EVs and can provide expertise in application of batteries in maritime and land-based transport.
Integration
Norway provides solutions and expertise for integration of batteries into maritime and land-based transport systems, energy and energy storage systems, and society at large. This includes EV charging solutions and infrastructure, battery management systems, grid integration and related technology, and energy storage systems.
Second life and recycling
Norway excels in repurposing used EV batteries, giving them a second life in energy storage systems and other applications. Norway is also a pioneer in recycling batteries once they have reached their end of life.
