Tokyo Session 2: "Renewable Energy"

MC: Per Christer Lund, Norwegian Embassy, Trade and Technology Office

13:00-13:30 OPENING

Overview: Reflection on the global energy situation under the current geopolitical situation with relevance and importance of energy partnership between Japan and Norway, aligning with energy security and joint technology developments.

Address 1: Ragnhild Sjoner Syrstad, State Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries

Address 2: Japanese government representative (TBC)

13:30-14:45 Global energy markets in transition

Both Japan and Norway are navigating the transition in volatile global energy markets. We are complimentary where Japan, heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels, is accelerating its efforts to diversify its energy mix and Norway positioning itself as a global supplier of low carbon energy based on green electrons and blue molecules. Our complementarily meets in developing and deploying frontier energy areas such as offshore wind and ammonia value chain. This session will address the global challenges and importance of cooperation between same-minded and less political volatile nations to reach common goals.

Keynote speaker:

Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director Emeritus, International Energy Agency (IEA), Chair of the Steering Committee of Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF)

Panel discussion:

Theme: Strategies for collaboration amidst in a volatile geopolitical world – the trilemma of energy security, affordability and sustainability.

Panelists:

  1. Ingunn Svegården, Senior Vice President Asia Pacific Renewables & Country Manager Singapore, Equinor: Perspectives on Norway’s and Japan’s renewable energy market and offshore wind opportunities
  2. NN, Vice President, Rystad Energy Japan, Global energy market outlook, highlighting Asian markets
  3. Marta Marmiroli, General Manager of Power Grid Engineering, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation

14:45-15:15 Coffee break

15:15-16:30 Accelerating offshore wind collaboration

Japan has recently opened its huge Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for harvesting one of the world's most promising offshore wind energy sources, most of this from floating offshore wind. Whereas Japan has very little experience from domestic offshore industry, Norway can complement with 50 years of offshore oil and gas and 15 years of floating offshore wind projects. This session will address current and growing collaboration on regulatory, technological, efficiency and economic aspects of floating wind development.

Introduction speaker:

David Povall, Senior Executive Officer, Offshore Wind, Renewable Energy Division, Kansai Electric Power Company: “KEPCOs contribution to North Sea offshore wind development – case study of Norway-Japan collaboration”

Panel discussion:

Theme: Long-term partnership, joint technology development, cost reduction and international standardization

Panelists:

  1. David Povall, Senior Executive Officer, KEPCO
  2. Sille Grjotheim, Global Segment Director Offshore Wind, DNV
  3. Mototsugu Ikari, General Manager International Relations, Floating Offshore Wind Technology Research Association (FLOWRA).
  4. Tone Lunde Bakker, CEO, Export Finance Norway

Signing ceremony offshore wind:

MoU between FLOWRA and Innovation Norway for advancing Japan-Norway offshore wind partnership

16:30-17:00 Coffee break

17:00-18:15 Low-carbon energy value chains

Whereas Japan has been the driver over the last 20 years for global hydrogen and ammonia value chains to lower its carbon footprint, Norway is exploiting its production and export capacity for green and blue low carbon energy. Although a direct supply chain from Norway and Japan seems unlikely right now, this seminar will address collaboration of supporting technologies, including production, transport and storage and downstream utilization of these low carbon molecules.

Keynote speaker:

Hiroshi Nambo, General Manager, Global CCS Institute (Japan): Japan’s position on CCS and low-carbon value chains

Panel discussion:

Challenges and solutions for implementing carbon capture and hydrogen/ammonia projects. Regulatory and technological hurdles

Panelists:

  1. Hiroshi Nambo, General Manager, Global CCS Institute (Japan)
  2. James Laybourn, Regional Sales Director, Energy Systems, DNV:Building global value chains for hydrogen and ammonia and the role of CCS to secure a low-carbon energy market – examples from Norwegian projects“
