At a glance

  • Captures floating waste directly on the water surface
  • Low-maintenance system with continuous operation
  • Based on proven oil spill response technology
  • Scalable from small marinas to large commercial ports

The PortBin Tide products from SpillTech offer a proven method for collecting floating waste directly at the source in ports.

CHALLENGE

Plastic waste and other floating debris is a huge problem in coastal areas, especially in cities.

The first-ever European-wide strategy on plastic waste, published in 2018, specifically mentions port reception facilities as an area of concern. Waste from both ships and land gathers in ports and is often carried out to sea.

Increasing regulatory pressure and sustainability reporting requirements are driving demand for effective solutions.

SOLUTION

PortBin Tide turns ports into active interception points for floating waste

Based on technology from oil spill response systems, SpillTech has created the PortBin Tide product line of simple, reliable and robust devices for removing floating waste.

The PortBin Tide mechanism works in much the same way as an oil skimmer. It sucks in surface water and debris from surrounding areas, filtering waste into a container. When the container is full, it can be easily emptied into a rubbish bin or skip and then quickly reinstalled in the PortBin.

PortBin Tide is delivered in two sizes: a standard version with a 30-litre container and an XL 1 000-litre version.

Ports are natural accumulation points for floating waste, making them one of the most effective locations for interception and enabling a continuous, autonomous clean-up effect.

In Bergen, Norway, a single standard PortBin unit collected more than 12 000 pieces of plastic in just six months, demonstrating measurable impact with minimal operational effort.

BENEFITS

Cleaner ports, stronger sustainability credentials and lower clean-up costs

The PortBin Tide products offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Reduced visible pollution in high-traffic port areas
  • Strengthened environmental branding and ESG reporting
  • Lowered manual clean-up costs
  • Easy installation and minimal maintenance

MARKET POTENTIAL

Rising demand for mechanical marine waste solutions

Demand for visible, measurable solutions to marine plastic pollution is rapidly increasing, driven by regulations, public pressure and ESG commitments.

PortBin Tide was launched commercially in 2017, and has been sold to ports and harbours in Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Greece, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey and the UK. PortBin by SpillTech is also actively expanding into new international markets.

PortBin Tide was the first of several products developed by SpillTech for marine waste collection. It complements other SpillTech solutions such as PortBin TrashTrawl and PortBin ShoreCleaner, forming a toolbox for marine and river waste interception.
