Nordic Batteries designs and manufactures high-power and high-energy battery modules, BMS and BESS products. The company bridges the gap between battery cell manufacturers and system integrators with world-leading robotic technology for automated cell stacking and battery module assembly.
Today, there is relatively little battery production in Norway, which is critical for improving supply security both domestically and across Europe. Batteries are key to balancing the power grid and ensuring a successful energy transition. The value chain is currently heavily dominated by Asian countries, primarily China. It is vital to build a local value chain to avoid complete dependency on foreign powers to successfully decarbonise the energy system.
In addition to increasing local production, the European battery industry is also seeking more sustainable and safer alternatives. Battery production is energy and resource-intensive. Using renewable energy in the production process enables batteries to be clean, in both production and use. Furthermore, batteries can be reactive if mishandled, so full control of the safety barriers is vital to ensuring safe operation.
Nordic Batteries manufactures its eNERGY high-energy battery modules and ePOWER high-power battery modules in Norway using battery cells from Norwegian manufacturers and its own ground-breaking technology for automated assembly.
Assembly of the individual battery cells into battery modules involves arranging the cells in a specific configuration and connecting them with electrical connectors. The cells are arranged in a series or parallel configuration, depending on the desired voltage and capacity of the module. Once the cells are connected, the module is sealed and tested to ensure that it meets the desired specifications.
Nordic Batteries’ battery modules can be used standalone or installed in a battery rack. The company also delivers eNERGY and ePOWER battery packs complete with a battery management system (BMS) and cooling. There are temperature sensors on each cell and safety barriers between them, ensuring complete control of the battery.
Nordic Batteries’ automated production process enables cost efficient battery production in Norway. At its facility in Kongsberg, the company has developed a world-leading robotic pilot line that boosts efficiency with 4.0 industry technology and is powered by renewable energy, reducing emissions.
The company also helps to fill the need for more battery production in Norway and for ensuring supply security in Norway and the rest of Europe.
Moreover, Nordic Batteries helps its clients to meet sustainability goals and tackle increasing regulatory pressures. All of the company’s products will be made ready for the EU digital battery passport with necessary information and indicators. This includes putting emission calculations and value chain assessments on the agenda.
The global market for sustainable batteries is expected to grow significantly, particularly in Europe, where regulatory support for green energy and supply security is strong.
The global battery market for energy storage systems (ESS), commercial vehicles, and other segments (excluding passenger vehicles) is expected to be worth EUR 25 billion by 2030.
As a key player in the Norwegian battery production value chain, Nordic Batteries is well positioned to serve this growing demand and help to improve supply security.
