Optronics Technology puts Norway on the map in industrial gas detection

Published 14 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

Optronics Technology has more than 40 years of expertise and experience in the gas detection industry, dating back to the development of the world's first solid-state infrared light source.

By combining deep knowledge of gas detection with efficient production and logistics, the company is writing the next chapter in Norwegian industrial innovation.

Now the Optronics PG11 Optical Gas Detector has been awarded the Made in Norway label.

For Optronics Technology, Made in Norway is about showcasing the foundation on which our company is built: Norwegian engineering expertise, high quality and solutions that protect people, industry and the environment.

CEO of Optronics Technology

Building on a Norwegian technology heritage

Headquartered in Oslo, Optronics Technology develops and manufactures advanced optical gas detectors that help protect people, infrastructure and the environment in some of the world’s most demanding industrial settings.

The company was founded in 2018 by Lasse Olav Irvam, Preben Storås and Even Rognlien, three professionals with extensive experience in optical gas detection and industrial safety. From the outset, their ambition was clear: to preserve and further develop Norwegian expertise in optical gas detection while building a modern, forward-looking technology company with both development and manufacturing based in Norway.

The company builds on a Norwegian technology heritage in solid-state infrared gas detection, with roots reaching back to early innovations developed in collaboration with the research organisation SINTEF. Today, R&D, testing, manufacturing and supply chain management are all brought together under one roof. This integrated approach enables rapid innovation, strong quality control and a short path from concept to finished product.

Serving the global gas detection market

The optical gas detection market is technology-driven and characterised by stringent requirements for safety, certification, reliability and proven performance.

“Our customers often operate in environments where the margin for error is small, and where early and accurate gas detection can be critical for protecting lives, assets and the environment," says Irvam.

In just a few years, Optronics Technology has established itself as a recognised supplier of high-quality optical gas detection solutions. The company serves industries including oil and gas, maritime, infrastructure and renewable energy. Its products are designed to operate reliably in harsh environments with extreme temperatures and vibration and demanding safety requirements.

While the company has developed, certified and delivered a significant number of gas detectors to customers worldwide, it continues to maintain a strong focus on Norwegian development, manufacturing and quality assurance as a key competitive advantage.

Norwegian technology protects lives and assets

At the core of Optronics Technology’s portfolio is the PG11, a robust optical point gas detector designed for the detection of combustible gases and CO₂. The PG11 is built on the company’s proprietary Solid State Infrared SafeSource™ technology, delivering exceptional stability and a long operational lifetime. The detector is supplied with lifetime factory calibration, integrated condition monitoring and extended maintenance intervals. These features help reduce the need for service, minimise downtime and provide greater confidence for operators working in safety-critical environments.

In addition to the detectors themselves, the company offers a wide range of accessories and integration options, enabling flexible deployment across applications. Solutions range from duct-mounting and sampling systems to seamless system integration through dedicated communication modules.

Norwegian origin as a differentiator

For Optronics Technology, the Made in Norway label highlights the values behind its products: high technical quality, responsible manufacturing, reliability, security and long-term industrial expertise. These are also values associated with Norway around the world.

“The label strengthens our identity as a Norwegian technology manufacturer, helps build greater trust among customers and partners and enables us to differentiate ourselves more clearly in an international market dominated by large global players,” concludes Irvam.
