Quick information

At a glance

  • Compact, robust and highly accurate emission analyser
  • Ideal for monitoring emissions from shipping vessels and industrial facilities
  • Less costly than traditional analysers, with a longer lifetime

Continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) are necessary for compliance with national and international emission control regulations at sea and on land.

Shipping vessels must comply with the IMO Sulphur 2020 cap to reduce emissions of sulphur oxide (SOₓ), nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) and particulate matter. These emissions lead to air pollution, causing 50 000 premature deaths a year in Europe alone. SOₓ emissions also cause acid rain. Because sulphur dioxide (SO₂) emissions generally make up 95 per cent of total SOₓ emissions, the IMO has determined that it is sufficient to measure these. To prevent cheating, ships are required to have an instrument that measures both CO₂ and SO₂. This makes it possible to calculate the total emissions of SO₂ in relation to the amount of fuel oil burned.

Meanwhile, process industries and refineries must also measure emissions to control combustion and thereby reduce air-polluting NOₓ and SO₂ emissions as well as CO₂ emissions. CEMS enable industry to keep emission levels in check in real time and aid pollution control authorities in policing emissions.

Gas analyser for continuous emissions monitoring

Using micro and nanotechnology, Tunable has developed the Tunable T2500 CEMS Analyser to measure CO₂, SO₂, NOₓ, methane, ethane and propane in exhaust gas.

The Tunable T2500 features the company’s proprietary MEMS tunable filter. The sample cell design ensures fast exchange of the sample gas, keeping response time to a minimum.

The analyser is compact and easy to install in both new installations and retrofits. With maintenance-free sensors and no moving parts, it requires minimal onsite maintenance.

Concrete benefits

The Tunable T2500 CEMS Analyser is a highly accurate, easy-to-operate emission analyser. It has a long lifetime and is virtually maintenance-free, making it less costly than traditional emission analysers.

The analyser simplifies emissions monitoring and enables correct reporting, facilitating compliance with national and international maritime emission regulations (EU 2015/757, MARPOL Annex VI, MEPC 68/21/Add.1), as well as with industrial emission regulations.

By reducing emissions, shipowners and industry can make their operations more environmentally sound and help to reduce the negative health impacts of air pollution.

Market potential

The global continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) market is projected to reach nearly USD 4 billion by 2027.

Growth in this market is being driven by increasingly stringent national and international emission control regulations, as well as increasing industrialisation and rising air pollution.

Tunable is a startup with roots in SINTEF MiNaLab, which is part of SINTEF, one of Europe’s largest independent research organisations.
