Wood-based products are used for a wide range of purposes, and are a main source of fuel in many parts of the world.

The primary commodity of the Norwegian timber industry is lumber that is used for construction or for pulp and paper production. When timber harvest residue is left to decay, a potential resource for fuel and other products is wasted.

Norsk Energigjenvinning provides facilities for chipping and grinding the by-products of lumber production. Its equipment has maximum energy efficiency ratings, using a combination of diesel fuel and electricity. There are many promising markets for wood biomass products including biofuel. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), solid biomass from forests, farms and cities is already a major energy source for heat and power generation, and could potentially account for one fifth of global energy consumption by 2050.

Norsk Energigjenvinning has high capacity, distributing over 150 000 metric tons of biomass products in 2018, with a turnover of more than USD 9 million.
