There are multiple factors to consider when calculating labour costs, including salary, national insurance contributions, holiday pay, pension costs and more.

Average labour costs by different types of industries

Statistics Norway is the national statistical institute of Norway and the main producer of official statistics. Among other things, it publishes total, direct and indirect labour costs and monthly earnings, by occupation and sector.

On the Statistics Norway website, you can find the average labour costs per full-time equivalent in Norway as of 2023, broken down into direct and indirect costs.

Altinn is Norway’s internet portal for digital dialogue between businesses and public authorities, including submission of forms and management of regulatory compliance. It integrates services from multiple public agencies, providing a one-stop solution for business registration, tax reporting and other administrative tasks.

Among other things, Altinn provides an overview of the costs attributable to having an employee, including salary, holiday pay, national insurance contributions, pension costs and occupational injury insurance.

Please note that there are a few cost items that are not included in the calculator, such as mandatory injury insurance, situational mandatory benefits, training and safety costs, and other costs such as travel expenses, overtime food and allowances.
